Turkish Citizenship for Chinese Investors: The Regulated Fund Route

A clear guide for investors from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and the Chinese diaspora: how the USD 500,000 fund route works, what to prepare and which home-country rules to check first.

Short answer: A Chinese national can apply for Turkish citizenship by investing at least USD 500,000 in units of a real estate or venture capital investment fund regulated by the Capital Markets Board of Türkiye and holding them for three years. Spouse and children under 18 are included. There is no requirement to live in Türkiye. Check mainland China's nationality and foreign exchange rules before you start.

How the fund route works

Instead of buying an apartment, you subscribe to units of a CMB-regulated fund through a Turkish bank or brokerage. The CMB then issues a conformity letter, and your lawyer files the residence permit and citizenship applications.

One transparent investment

One subscription at a price set by licensed appraisers, units held in your own account and fund disclosures on KAP. No developer or agent pricing.

Diversified real estate

Your exposure is spread across a professionally managed portfolio instead of a single unit you must furnish, rent and later sell.

Exit after three years

After the holding period, units are redeemed under the fund rules. There is no need to find a buyer for a property.

Family included

Your spouse and children under 18 apply with you on the same investment.

What Chinese investors should check first

Dual nationality

Türkiye allows dual citizenship, but the Nationality Law of the PRC does not recognise it: a Chinese national settled abroad who voluntarily acquires a foreign nationality loses Chinese nationality automatically (Art. 9). Take advice on your hukou, property and business position in mainland China before applying.

Moving funds

Mainland China limits individual foreign exchange conversions under an annual quota. Many investors use funds already held outside the mainland, for example in Hong Kong. The source of funds must be documented in either case.

Hong Kong and Macau

Holders of HKSAR and Macau SAR passports follow the same Turkish process. Your lawyer will advise on how your home rules treat a second nationality.

Documents

Passport, birth and marriage certificates and children's birth certificates, with apostille or consular legalisation and sworn Turkish translation.

Step by step

  1. Call and fund selection: we explain the funds, the documents and the timeline, and you choose a fund.
  2. Tax number and accounts: a Turkish tax number and a bank or brokerage account are opened, usually through your lawyer with a power of attorney.
  3. Transfer and conversion: USD 500,000 is transferred, converted at a Turkish bank and the fund units are bought.
  4. CMB conformity letter: the CMB confirms the investment and the three-year holding commitment.
  5. Residence permit and citizenship file: your lawyer files the applications; biometrics and interviews follow.
  6. Decision: citizenship is granted by presidential decision, then ID cards and passports are issued.
